EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma announced Thursday it has agreed in principle on a new deal to keep Adam Dorrel, a three-time national coach of the year, as head football coach of the Bronchos for upcoming seasons.
In his third season at Central, Dorrel led the Bronchos to the MIAA Championship for the first time since UCO joined the league in 2012. The Bronchos also made the playoffs for the first time since 2003, and won a playoff game for the first time since 1998.
Dorrel led a high-powered offense, to which he credited Associate Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator James Curlee, who was promoted during training camp.
UCO led the country in total offense and ranked in the top five scoring and pass offense. The Bronchos put up the No. 13 rush offense in the country with the third-rated pass offense, with the fifth-ranked scoring offense in the country.
Central Oklahoma set 19 new school records this fall, with seven new team records – all on offense – and 12 individual records, also all on offense.
Dorrel is 22-13 in three seasons with the Bronchos. After a 6-5 campaign followed by a 5-6 run, UCO turned a corner in Dorrel's third year this fall. The Bronchos started the year 7-0 and won the MIAA title with a 10-1 overall record and an 8-1 mark in league play. The Bronchos beat Ouachita Baptist in the NCAA Division II Football Championship first round before falling in the regional semifinal at Ferris State.
