Edinboro, Pa. – Edinboro Athletics announced the hiring of Matthew Scott as the 17th head coach of Edinboro football.
Scott takes over the Fighting Scot football team after spending the last six seasons as the defensive coordinator at perennial Super Region 1 power New Haven.
"My family and I are so excited for the opportunity to join the Edinboro Family and lead this program," said Scott. "I am ready to take on the responsibility that comes with leading the Edinboro football program and can't wait to get to work with our young men and help them and our program reach new heights. I want to personally thank President Dr. Jon Anderson, Dr. Katherine Robbins and the hiring committee for this opportunity. I ask all our alums and supporters to bring all their positive energy and enthusiasm as we get going, together we can achieve more!"
Under Scott, the Charger defense has consistently found itself near the top of the national rankings. In 2024, the New Haven defense ranked second in the country against the run holding opponents to just 62.5 yards per game on the ground. Their average of 4.18 sacks per game was the best mark in Division II. The Chargers led the NE-10 and ranked 14th nationally in scoring defense holding opponents to just 15.7 points per game.
"We are excited to add Matt to our staff and for him to lead the Edinboro football program," said Director of Athletics Katherine Robbins. "Matt brings extensive football knowledge, passion for the game and student-athletes, and a track record of success in our region that will benefit our student-athletes on and off the field."
Under his guidance, 37 Charger defensive players have earned NE-10 All-Conference honors. This season five New Haven defenders were first-team selections and two were second-team headlined by Defensive Lineman of the Year Jack Quander.
Prior to his time as the defensive coordinator at New Haven, Scott spent two seasons as the defensive coordinator at DIII Susquehanna University. In his time with the River Hawks, Susquehanna went 11-9 and three players earned All-Centennial honors including cornerback Danial Shelton earning Rookie of the Year honors in 2016.
Scott also had a five-year run as an assistant at the Division I level coaching with FCS Albany of the NEC. While on staff, the Great Danes won back-to-back NEC titles in 2011 and 2012. In the Summer of 2013, he was selected by the Buffalo Bills as a Bill Walsh Minority Coaching Fellowship participant.
The West Allegheny graduate is familiar with the PSAC. Scott played defensive line at IUP from 2004-2007. He spent the 2008 season as the defensive line coach for the Crimson Hawks before his first stint at New Haven coaching safeties and linebackers while also serving as the video coordinator.
